On August 15, 2009, Hale O Nā Kāula Church was invited to participate in the second “Praise in the Islands” event, which was held in Maui at Paukukalo Park, Wailuku. We really took the time to prepare and seek the Lord for this event. Pastor Daniel Oliveira had a chance to connect with a number of participating pastors and they all prayed for and agreed together on the oneness of Christ’s Church.

In the process of rehearsing for their time onstage, our band grew in their relationships with one another in Christ. Under the guidance of Daniel and Debbie Oliveira, and Thom Foster, they faced good and hard moments, but God’s love and oneness prevailed! We had Chris Baker on guitar and vocals, Tim Welch on guitar, Matt King on bass, Jon Green on drums, JL McFerrin on keyboards and vocals, and Aimee Christiansen and Gesen Nisly on vocals. Leanne Dunn choreographed her own hula to “I Will Follow.” The band performed ten songs in all, and Dani and Debbie felt that the band really represented Hale O Kāula’s heart of worship.

A total of ten churches, including churches from O‘ahu, participated with their bands and food booths, and around 300 people came and left throughout the day. It was a wonderful day of praise, fellowship and good local food. Our church also participated with a food booth, selling soft drinks, hot dogs with pineapple relish, cookies and iced coffee (perfect for a warm day in Maui!). It was a great time to connect with other churches on Maui and worship our Lord Jesus Christ together.
