There is a saying in ancient Hawaii which says that words can either be a source of healing or destroying. This is so true, and we need to be careful with our words.
Ka ‘olelo no ke ola, i ka ‘olelo no ka make. It means: In speech is life, in speech is death.
A friend sent me this and it really rang a bell for me as I was reading James 3. This particular verse touched me deeply: “No one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God.” It doesn’t have to be this way! All I have to do is let the love of Christ control my tongue.
An example of this to me is the Internet today. Anyone can say anything about anyone. It’s called freedom of speech. But if we are aware of the power words have, we would seek the gentleness of wisdom before we voiced whatever we want to. We must take ownership for what we say, because we will reap the fruit of it. Christ explains this very clearly to us: “What goes into a man’s mouth does not make him ‘unclean,’ but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him ‘unclean.’“ (Matthew 15:11)
I own my mouth and my tongue and I have the ability to bridle it. I can choose to speak positively and with His anointing from now on! That’s powerful!
What’s fun is that one of the pastors of our sister church on Oahu recently wrote about the same topic, and we hadn’t even talked to one another about it! Jeremiah Gruenberg’s blog.
